Why humidity control is so important when storing a car

We all understand that storing things correctly is essential when it comes to preserving them and ensuring they hum along without a hitch.

It’s why nobody would store a Rembrandt in a damp, mildew-riddled cellar. And why computer servers aren’t arranged in the full glare of the midday sun. And it’s why we keep so much of our fresh food in the fridge.

In much the same way, humidity control is crucial when storing cars to protect them from potential damage and preserve their condition.

Experts throughout the automotive industry agree that the optimum humidity level for perfectly preserving a car is 55 per cent relative humidity. Relative humidity is a way of describing how much humidity (or water vapour) is in the air, compared to the maximum amount the air can hold at that temperature. Warm air can hold more water vapour than cold air.

To correctly control the environment in any car storage facility, it should be equipped with a custom-designed, industrial dehumidifying system. A dehumidifier is a device that removes the moisture from the air in the building and reduces indoor humidity levels.

It is essential that the dehumidifier has been designed to operate effectively within the volume of the building. At Racing Green Car Storage, we took great care to assess and select an industry-leading solution to maintain the perfect humidity levels within our building, so we could provide the optimum climate for your car.

Our Cotes C65 unit was designed specifically for managing the humidity of the 10,000sq ft facility at Racing Green Car Storage. It is capable of removing up to 19kg of liquid from the air every hour, and the treated air is evenly distributed throughout our building by vented, fabric ducting that hangs from the apex of our roof, and runs the full length of the building.

We maintain a relative humidity of 55 per cent, to ensure your car or collection is perfectly preserved for years to come. And we believe it is something everyone should insist on when looking for their ideal car storage provider.

Top 5 reasons why humidity control is important

  1. Preventing corrosion: High humidity levels can lead to the formation of moisture on the car's surfaces, which can cause corrosion or rusting of metal parts, including the body, chassic, and engine components. Corrosion can be costly to repair and significantly reduce the value of the vehicle.
  2. Preserving paintwork: Excessive moisture in the air can negatively affect the paintwork of a car. High humidity may cause the paint to blister, peel, or fade, leading to a deterioration in the vehicle's appearance. Proper humidity control helps maintain the integrity and aesthetics of the car's paintwork.
  3. Avoiding mould and mildew: Humidity provides an ideal environment for the growth of mould and mildew. When cars are stored in a humid environment, moisture can accumulate inside the vehicle, particularly in enclosed spaces like the interior or boot. Mould and mildew can cause unpleasant odours, stain surfaces, and even lead to health issues. Controlling humidity levels helps prevent the growth of these harmful microorganisms.
  4. Preserving interior materials: High humidity can damage a car's interior materials, such as upholstery, leather, and dashboard components. It can cause them to warp, crack, or lead to mould and mildew growing on the surface and attacking the natural oils that help protect leather. By maintaining optimal humidity levels, you can help prolong the lifespan of the interior and prevent costly repairs or replacements.
  5. Protecting electrical systems: Moisture and humidity can adversely affect a car's electrical systems, including wiring, sensors, and electronic components. Excessive moisture can cause short circuits, corrosion of connectors, and malfunctioning of various electrical systems. By controlling humidity, you reduce the risk of electrical damage and ensure the car's systems remain in good working order.
