The intersection of cars and culture

We hadn’t met and we didn’t know they were coming, but when the Porsche 911 GT3 RS rolled into our farm, and word spread that Ben had only pulled off the dust sheet and driven it away from the Porsche dealer the day before, we knew we were among true enthusiasts.

Here was the latest and greatest 911. A car that has dumfounded the critics and dazzled owners alike. A car that truly redefines the transfer of technical know-how from the race track to the road. A car that raises the bar an uncomfortable notch higher for the competition. And the first thing Ben wanted to do after collecting it was take it out so he could share it with fellow car enthusiasts.

The event was a Legends Drivers Club meeting, hosted by Racing Green Car Storage, and the turnout was far beyond our expectations.

More than 70 Porsche drivers turned up, and when mixed in with a fair few interlopers with interesting cars – Aston Martin DBX 007, the latest Bentley Continental GT (brought along by our friend Eloise at Lamborghini and Bentley Tunbridge Wells), a delightful and cleverly restored Citroën 2CV, long-enjoyed Morgan Plus Eight – the atmosphere was buzzing. Especially when visitors saw the calibre of some of the road and racing cars awaiting them inside our facility.

What events like this highlight is the breadth and depth of a fan base for a marque such as Porsche. Take Ben, and his day-old GT3 RS. He could have tucked it away in the garage and only taken it out on a perfect, sun-soaked day, but instead he wanted to share this race-derived road car with all the petrolheads who he rightly predicted would be interested in its incredible hardware and smart software.

Ben’s partner Beth brought another surprise, their vivid-yellow 911 RSR recreation. How they settle the argument over who’ll drive which car is anyone’s guess…

It wasn’t the only RSR tribute rumbling over our immaculate concrete driveway and into the display. Will brought his 964-based RSR, a storied ex-racing car that has won championships in the Porsche Club and the AMOC Intermarque, as well as boasting numerous 911 Challenge victories. It looked and sounded incredible, the mechanical spec’ brought to life by Rindt Vehicle Design was eyebrow-raising but it had been struck down with a low tyre pressures. We were glad it happened at Racing Green, so we could get the tyre checked and inflated so Will could get home safely.

A Viper Green Cayman R looked so dainty and petite compared with its modern-day GT4 equivalents which were also present. Several Porsche 914s, the inspiration for Cayman and Boxster, looked better than ever. Mark’s beautifully restored 911 T drew a non-ending stream of admirers. Jason’s 911 GT2 996 looked as mean as its reputation suggests, in Jet Black. The 968 Sport, whose owner I never managed to track down for a chat… As a fan of the Club Sport, I was keen to hear how it compares, given so much of the hardware is the same. Harrison from VVS, our nearby neighbours specialising in supercar sales, dropped the roof on a GT3 Speedster.

Our friend Peter, editor of The Road Rat – essential reading for all car peeps and magazine geeks, by the way – came down from London in his ever-so-clean ’85 Carrera, and was blown away by the mix of Stuttgart machinery on view and the warm welcome from the Legends crowd.

Stories were swapped. Restorations were detailed. Opinions were shared. And if a helping hand or spot of advice was needed, this warm bunch of Porsche people was the best place to ask.

The feedback on the day and across social made our hearts soar. As the founders of a new business, it’s one thing believing you have done everything properly and to exacting standards, quite another to hear that from those taking a tour of your facility, complementing us for action on carbon-balancing, and enjoying the secluded, peaceful spot we have down on the farm.

Our thanks go to all who came out and made it such a successful Breakfast of Champions meet. In case any of us needed reminding, it showed, once again, that the intersection of cars and culture can be a hugely positive thing for us to be around.

We left feeling we wanted to do it all over again. Rest assured, we will…
