Simon Wright is the sort of budding entrepreneur you’ll warm to moments after you first strike up a conversation with him.
The Nottingham-based businessman and founder of Limited100, which produces bespoke automotive art, originally acted on a hunch after he couldn’t find any interesting artwork of a Lamborghini Miura supercar.
The hunch appears to be paying off. His car-based artworks are in demand. From some of the world’s pre-eminent collectors of classic cars to premiership footballers, car dealers to private clients, Wright is the modern-day equivalent of a gallery curator, identifying photographers, commissioning photoshoots and turning those images into hand-made prints that are limited to 100 editions, signed by the artist and curator, and certified as authentic.
The 34-year old is a self-confessed petrolhead, identifying cars from the tender age of just one. But it wasn’t until the launch of Gran Turismo, the 1998 Polyphony game for Sony’s PlayStation, that he became hooked on the hobby, a bug that only intensified upon the arrival of a revitalised Top Gear TV show, in 2002.
Wright has a background in digital marketing, and things have been heating up since his first job after university, working with Aga Rangemaster. “If I had had the idea for Limited100 in 2011, when I graduated, I wouldn’t have been able to execute it in the way I have because it's like an amalgamation of all the skills I've learned over the last 15 or so years.”
There have been new skills learned, too. Wright has not only had to find and approach some of the most talented photographers who work with the automotive form, but also get up to speed on printing processes and find suppliers who could hand-print and frame ultra-high definition imagery.
Sometimes, the artwork is so large – up to five metres wide – that Wright and his team of Nottingham-based printers have to turn to artificial intelligence and interpolation software to make sure any missing pixels are rendered correctly.
He champions and appreciates all photographers whose work is offered through the Limited100 platform, but says he personally enjoys the works of Paul Ward, whose images he first spotted when he was searching for Lamborghini Miura artwork.
“I was looking for artwork, in 2019, to go into my first home. I was very proud of owning my first house and had a green theme in living room and kitchen, partly influenced by Breaking Bad, and wanted a green Miura print to complement it. Paul hadn’t sold his work before privately, but that all changed once he heard about the concept for Limited100,” says Wright.
Other artists include Rick Noel, Tim Wallace, Johan Wedenström, Abby Bowers, Niall Julian, Thomas Boudewijn and Rick Noël, and you can explore their catalogue on Limited100’s site. From Aston Martin’s DB5, made famous by the Bond franchise, to more modern supercars such as the Mclaren 720S, there is something for car enthusiasts of all persuasions. In all, there are more than 430 images available, and once ordered each takes up to six hours to make by hand, while the best-selling format is A1 (59 x 84cm), which costs £399.
Wright is proud to have achieved Made In Britain status, and says all works are from sustainable sources, while paints and varnishes are water-based. “Most of our clients will invest in a piece simply because they like the artwork, but some are just as interested in hearing about the amount of craftsmanship that goes into creating each print,” says Wright.
As the company continues to grow, the entrepreneur has his sights set on expanding Limited100’s presence in America, where a lot of orders already originate from. And he would like to establish a physical store in the UK.
But however much things evolve for Limited100, Wright says at its core it will always be about celebrating the talented artists and craftspeople who bring cars to life.
